Night Terror, a short story

She stumbled on the uneven, ancient cobbled flooring, reaching out to steady herself; her hand found itself sinking into some slimy substance, oozing from the blackness of the walls surrounding the dank, musty passage. Whatever sludge coated the wall, squished between her fingers; she wrinkled her nose in disgust, as she used the wall as her guide.

The passage was pitch black, cold, and it stank. Something skittered in the darkness,  behind her. Choking down a sob, she kept moving forward, until suddenly, the wall was gone. Her hand found empty space, causing her to lose her balance and fall. The cobble stones dug painfully into her hip; it was the last straw, and salty tears rolled down her cheeks.

Where the hell was she? She had woken up, and found herself alone in this hell hole. What events led her to being here, she had no idea, but she was cold, scared, and very lost.

There was that noise again... something was moving somewhere behind her, and it was getting louder... or nearer.

She felt around the floor for the nearest wall to guide her forward, but it was too late. Something grabbed her calf and yanked her backwards. She screamed, desperately clawing at the cobblestones, sobbing uncontrollably, but it was useless.

She rolled onto her back, kicking and flailing, and came face to face with glowing amber eyes...

Suddenly the lights were on, and she was on the floor beside her bed, tangled in her own bedding, while her brother stood in her open doorway laughing at her plight. She chucked a nearby shoe at him, her crooked smile dying. The night was not finished with her yet.

Her eyes grew huge as she looked beyond her brother's shoulder,  into the darkness of the hallway. Frozen in horror, she saw behind her amused brother... glowing amber eyes.
